Due to changes in Polish legislation, Ukrainian citizens need to update their data in the PESEL register.

At the same time, not all persons with outdated passport data in the PESEL register risk losing the UKR status. The key factor is what information is currently contained in the PESEL register.

Before contacting the gmina authority, Ukrainians are advised to check their data through the Gov.pl service.

WHO NEEDS TO UPDATE DATA

The update concerns Ukrainian citizens who:

have a PESEL number with UKR status and received PESEL:

  • based on a passport that has expired or was replaced;
  • or without a foreign passport (including based on a birth certificate);

after receiving the PESEL number, obtained a new identity document (issued a new foreign passport), or had changes in personal data (for example, a change of surname) that must be entered into the PESEL register.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE

  • personally contact the gmina authority (Urząd gminy / miasta);
  • submit a valid foreign passport;
  • update data in the PESEL register;
  • if necessary — provide fingerprints.

DEADLINE

The data update must be completed by August 31, 2026.

SPECIFICALLY REGARDING CHILDREN

If a child:

  • received a PESEL number without a foreign passport; or
  • after receiving PESEL, a passport was issued,

the data must be mandatorily updated.

WHERE TO APPLY

To any:

  • Urząd gminy or
  • Urząd miasta

at the place of residence.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR DATA IN THE PESEL REGISTER

Before visiting the gmina authority, it is recommended to check what data is currently contained in the PESEL register.

1. Go to the page:

Check your data in the PESEL register (www.gov.pl)

2. Authenticate using:

  • Trusted Profile;
  • e-ID;
  • or another electronic identification method.

3. Verify the data displayed in the register:

  • first and last name;
  • date of birth;
  • citizenship;
  • PESEL number;
  • data of the document on the basis of which registration was made.

4. If necessary, you can check the child's data and download an official confirmation from the register.

WHAT TO PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO?

If after receiving the PESEL UKR number you issued a new Ukrainian foreign passport, it is recommended to check whether the current passport data is included in the PESEL register.

Obtaining a new passport does not automatically update data in the PESEL register. To enter updated information, you must separately contact the gmina authority (Urząd gminy / Urząd miasta).

Timely verification and updating of data will help avoid problems when using rights and services available to persons with PESEL UKR status.
