The mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyi, announced a proposal to introduce new rules for using electric scooters starting July 1, which include a number of restrictions and requirements to improve safety.

According to him, the relevant proposals were considered at a meeting of the city council's executive committee.

In particular, starting July 1, the following changes are proposed:

  • rental operators must verify the age of users, and electric scooter rental will only be available from 16 years old;
  • identify accident-prone areas where the speed of electric scooters will be limited to 15 km/h;
  • introduce mandatory use of protective helmets, for which corresponding changes to the improvement rules are planned;
  • prohibit leaving rental electric scooters outside specially designated parking areas.

Andriy Sadovyi also noted that the city authorities do not have the power to completely ban electric scooters.

“Many ask why the city simply does not ban electric scooters. Because the city currently does not have such powers. A ban can be announced even tomorrow. But if scooters continue to operate in the city after that, it will not be a solution, but an imitation of one,” he said.

The mayor added that the city is focusing on strengthening rules, limiting speed in dangerous zones, and initiating changes to national legislation.

“No business and no convenience can be more important than human life,” Sadovyi emphasized.
