In Kyiv region, a doctor is suspected of failing to provide assistance to a 3-year-old child with chemical burns
In Kyiv region, a doctor of the communal non-commercial enterprise of the Skvyra City Council "Skvyra City Primary Health Care Center" has been notified of suspicion of failure to provide assistance to a patient without valid reasons, which caused severe consequences (part 1, article 139 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, a mother brought her three-year-old son to the medical facility's emergency department after he accidentally ingested a household chemical product. The child showed clear signs of acute poisoning and severe chemical burns of the oral cavity and esophagus. In such cases, the speed and accuracy of medical actions are critically important for the patient's life and health, with every minute counting.
Despite this, the investigation established that the on-duty doctor did not conduct the necessary medical examination, did not provide emergency assistance, did not organize hospitalization, and did not ensure the child's referral to a specialized medical institution for further treatment. The investigation notes that the medical worker had the opportunity and was obliged to provide assistance in accordance with official duties and legal requirements.
According to expert conclusions conducted over three years, the child was diagnosed with chemical burns of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, esophagus, and stomach. The injuries sustained were life-threatening and classified as severe bodily harm.
The boy was saved only thanks to subsequent specialized medical treatment.
