Life imprisonment proposed for rape and pedophilia
In Ukraine, there are calls to strengthen criminal liability for rape, pedophilia, and other serious sexual crimes. A corresponding petition has been published on the government portal.
The author of the appeal asks the government to initiate legislative changes aimed at significantly increasing penalties for sexual crimes. In his opinion, rape and sexual violence leave victims with severe physical and psychological consequences for life. Both women and men can suffer from such crimes, and crimes against children are especially brutal, as due to their age they cannot fully protect themselves.
The petition states that a significant portion of citizens consider the current punishments insufficient for crimes that cause such serious harm to victims. In this regard, the author emphasizes the need to ensure maximum protection of citizens from sexual violence and the inevitability of punishment for the guilty.
Among the proposed changes is the introduction of life imprisonment for rape, pedophilia, and sexual crimes against children. It is also proposed to establish penalties of up to 15 years imprisonment for attempted rape.
Additionally, the author of petition No. 41/010002-26ep calls for banning conditional early release for persons convicted of rape, pedophilia, and other sexual crimes against children. It is separately proposed to establish equal criminal liability for sexual crimes regardless of the gender of the offender or the victim.
According to the author of the appeal, the safety of citizens regardless of their gender and age must remain one of the key priorities of the state. He believes that the law should equally protect women, men, and children, and that punishments for crimes that destroy people's lives should be as severe and inevitable as possible.
In this regard, the Cabinet of Ministers is asked to consider the possibility of preparing appropriate legislative initiatives and to support strengthening the protection of citizens from sexual violence.
