Electricity bills may increase: Ukrainians reminded of an important rule

Ukrainians are advised not to delay submitting electricity meter readings, as this affects the accuracy of charges for consumed electricity. If the data is not received within the specified period, the calculation may be made not based on actual consumption but on estimated figures.

When readings for the previous month are accepted

The electricity accounting system requires data submission at the end of the billing month and in the first days of the following month. It is during this period that operators receive information to generate accurate bills.

For accounting electricity used in May 2026, consumers needed to submit readings from May 30 to June 3 inclusive. Data sent later may not be included in the current calculation.

In such cases, consumption volume will be determined based on average readings from previous periods. Because of this, the amount on the bill may differ from actual electricity expenses.

What owners of multi-tariff meters need to know

Consumers using two-zone meters often face difficulties. These devices record electricity consumption separately depending on the time of day, so it is important not to confuse the values when submitting readings.

The meter automatically records electricity usage during daytime and nighttime periods. The daytime tariff applies from 7 AM to 11 PM, while the nighttime tariff is in effect from 11 PM to 7 AM.

On the device display, information is shown alternately. In most models, nighttime tariff values are marked with codes T1, E1, T11, or 1.8.1. Daytime tariff uses the designations T2, E2, T12, or 1.8.2. If the markings differ, they can be clarified in the manufacturer's technical documentation.

When submitting data, only whole numbers without decimal places should be entered. Readings for different tariffs are submitted separately.

Who does not need to send data manually

Some consumers use automatic meter reading systems. If the residence is equipped with an Automated System for Commercial Electricity Metering (ASKOE), information about consumed electricity is transmitted to the supplier without the owner's involvement, so no additional actions are required.

Why it is important to submit readings even when there is no consumption

Energy providers recommend submitting readings even when an apartment or house remains empty for a long time. Lack of consumption does not exempt from the obligation to inform the operator about the current meter status.

If data is not received, the system may automatically calculate electricity usage based on the average of previous months. Because of this, payment documents may include amounts that do not correspond to actual consumption.
