They want to make mathematics optional on the NMT, but the Ministry of Education is categorically against it
The Ministry of Education and Science does not support the legislative initiative that provides for reducing the number of subjects on the national multi-subject test and transferring mathematics to the list of elective disciplines. This was stated by the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi.
According to the minister, the government has already submitted a bill regarding the conditions of the 2027 admission campaign, which maintains the current model of conducting the NMT. At the same time, the alternative bill proposing to change the status of mathematics from a mandatory subject to an elective one is categorically not supported by the Ministry of Education and Science.
Lisovyi emphasized that the national multi-subject test is designed to check the basic competencies of applicants — the ability to read, write, and count. That is why, in his opinion, mathematics should remain among the mandatory subjects.
"Canceling mathematics or history, removing them from the mandatory subjects of the NMT — this is absurd and will not bring any positive changes to the country," the minister said.
The discussion around mathematics on the NMT intensified after the start of the main testing session, which began on May 20 and will last until June 25. On social networks, applicants and parents actively discuss the difficulty of this year's tasks, especially in mathematics.
Against this background, the head of the subcommittee on higher education of the parliamentary committee on education, science, and innovations, Yulia Hryshyna, together with a group of 50 people's deputies, registered an alternative bill No. 15254-1. The document proposes to reduce the number of NMT subjects in 2027 and make mathematics optional.
Currently, the NMT is conducted according to the model that was in place last year. Applicants take four subjects: Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine, and one elective subject — foreign language, biology, geography, physics, chemistry, or Ukrainian literature.
