Citizens want to be given more access to information about the activities of local authorities
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on State Building, Local Self-Government, Regional Development, and Urban Planning presented legislative proposals aimed at increasing the transparency of local self-government bodies and improving accountability mechanisms in this area.
The proposed changes are based on an analysis of current legislation and provide for amendments to the Laws of Ukraine "On Local Self-Government in Ukraine," "On Access to Public Information," as well as to the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses.
During the presentation, participants were given an overview of the current regulatory framework, outlined the main problems in the practical application of legislation, and identified possible ways to further improve it in the field of ensuring transparency of local self-government.
During the discussion, attention was paid to:
- the main problems in implementing legislative norms regarding the transparency of local self-government;
- the responsibility of officials and other authorized entities for non-compliance with openness requirements;
- expanding citizens' access to public information and strengthening the openness of local government bodies' activities.
Participants emphasized that the results of the discussion could form the basis for further legislative changes aimed at increasing the transparency of local self-government. In their opinion, such steps will contribute to strengthening citizens' trust in local authorities, ensuring proper access to public information, and bringing Ukrainian governance approaches closer to European standards of openness and accountability.
