Giants of the Roads: Government Launches Experiment with the Longest Trucks in Ukraine
The government supported the initiative of the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development to launch an experimental project using long three-trailer road trains. At the first stage, such vehicles will operate only on the Kyiv — Odesa route.
As explained by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development, a long three-trailer road train is a freight vehicle with several consecutively connected trailers or semi-trailers, allowing the transportation of a larger volume of cargo in one trip.
Similar transport solutions have long been used in European countries, including Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and the Netherlands. They are used there to increase logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs, and decrease the number of trips.
The Ministry of Communities and Territories Development expects that the project implementation will reduce costs for cargo transportation, fuel, and vehicle maintenance. It also foresees the possibility of transporting a larger volume of cargo with fewer trips.
Moreover, the use of three-trailer road trains is expected to contribute to a more efficient distribution of load on road infrastructure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by decreasing the number of freight trips.
