Sex education is proposed to be included in the school curriculum: how Ukrainians reacted
Despite regular discussions about the necessity of sex education for children and teenagers, public support for relevant initiatives remains extremely low. The latest initiative to introduce comprehensive sex education in Ukrainian schools failed to attract significant public attention and did not gather even a hundred votes in three months of signature collection.
A petition posted on the Cabinet of Ministers' website calling for the introduction of comprehensive sex education into the school curriculum did not reach the required support threshold for official government consideration.
As of June 13, the appeal was supported by only 77 people. At least 25,000 signatures were needed for the Cabinet to consider it.
Arguments presented by the petition author
The petition text stated that currently sex education is not a mandatory part of the educational process in Ukrainian schools. The author emphasized that this may negatively affect young people's awareness of reproductive health, prevention of sexually transmitted infections, as well as issues of personal safety and violence prevention.
The petition also claimed that the introduction of systematic sex education could help reduce a number of social risks among teenagers and align with the goals of state policy in the field of gender equality in education.
What was proposed to change
The author called on the government to develop a national sex education program for schools taking into account the recommendations of the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
Among the proposals was also the integration of the relevant course into the mandatory school curriculum starting from 2026. It was envisaged that the educational materials should be age-appropriate and cover topics such as health, personal boundaries, consent, prevention of risky behavior, and gender equality.
A similar petition has repeatedly failed to gain support
This is not the first attempt to draw the government's attention to the issue of sex education through the electronic petition mechanism. Earlier, in January of this year, a similar appeal also failed to gather the required number of votes for consideration.
At the same time, the topic remains a subject of public discussion. As early as 2020, the then leadership of the Ministry of Education and Science stated that sex education is an important area of work with schoolchildren, but its implementation requires a balanced approach and public consensus to avoid distortion of the idea itself and ensure the effectiveness of such educational programs.
