Romania expels Russian diplomat after 'Shahed' drones violated Romanian airspace
Romania declared a Russian embassy staff member persona non grata following a series of violations of its airspace by Russian drones. The Russian diplomat has five days to leave the country. This was reported by the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry noted that by order of the head of the ministry, Oana Țoiu, the Russian ambassador in Bucharest, Vladimir Lipayev, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The reason was repeated violations of the country’s airspace from July 24 to 26, when Romanian military shot down three drones that illegally entered the country’s territory.
During the meeting, the Russian diplomat was shown fragments of one of the destroyed drones.
As emphasized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the prosecutor’s investigation officially confirmed that the discovered components are of Russian origin.
The Romanian side expressed a strong protest regarding the airspace violations and stated that responsibility for the incidents lies entirely with the Russian Federation.
Following the meeting, the Russian ambassador was handed an official verbal note. The document states that one of the staff members of the Russian diplomatic mission in Bucharest is declared persona non grata and is obliged to leave Romanian territory within five days.
Additionally, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned its ambassador to Russia to Bucharest for consultations.
