Will free rides on public transport be preserved in Kharkiv — Igor Terekhov's response
The Kharkiv city authorities currently plan to maintain free rides on public transport — in the metro, buses, trolleybuses, and trams. This was stated by the city mayor Igor Terekhov in an interview with «Radio Svoboda».
«Is it difficult? Yes, it is difficult, but it is necessary. Because a person who receives a pension of 3,500 hryvnias and that’s it, cannot afford many things today. And in general, our metro is the main shelter, how can we charge money for that.
And no matter what anyone says, no matter how they criticize, ask the people whether it is needed or not. I believe — and this is my deep conviction, and I will stand by it — as long as we have such opportunities, we will have free rides,» he said.
According to Terekhov, after the war, the city authorities will look for ways to ensure that Kharkiv residents who have endured the horrors of war have free transportation.
«We will try. I see that today, and this is objective, energy prices are rising, transportation costs are increasing.
Please tell me, how can a person who receives 3,500 hryvnias a month afford a 30-hryvnia fare? How much can they travel? Should they walk? Are we inhumane?» he added.
