On Friday, June 5, a number of holidays are celebrated in Ukraine and worldwide. Several important events also took place on this day in the past.

June 5 is celebrated in Ukraine and around the world as World Environment Day. This is one of the most important international environmental dates, aimed at drawing attention to environmental issues and encouraging people, communities, businesses, and states to care for nature conservation. The holiday was established by the United Nations in 1972 during the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm.

Also, June 5 is European Dental Technicians Day. The holiday is dedicated to specialists who make dental prostheses, crowns, veneers, orthodontic appliances, and other dental constructions, helping people restore the health and beauty of their smiles.

Additionally, June 5 is World Day Against Speciesism. This day was initiated by animal rights advocates to draw attention to the phenomenon of species discrimination, or speciesism. Species discrimination is understood as granting different rights, value, or moral status to living beings solely based on their belonging to a particular biological species. Supporters of this concept believe that such treatment of animals is similar to other forms of prejudice and inequality, such as racism or sexism.

June 5 is also International Day Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. This date was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2017 to raise awareness of the problem of illegal fishing and the need to preserve marine resources.

What Church Holiday Is Today

On June 5, believers celebrate the Memorial Day of Saint Dorotheus, Bishop of Tyre, a Christian bishop of the city of Tyre who lived in the 3rd–4th centuries. During the persecutions of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, he was forced to leave his see but returned to service after the persecutions ceased. Saint Dorotheus was renowned for his deep education, knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, and zealous preaching of the Christian faith. According to tradition, he lived over one hundred years. During the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate, who tried to revive paganism, the saint was again persecuted. Around 362 AD, at the age of 107, he was captured and after torture, he accepted a martyr's death for Christ.
