Shashliks Can Cost 68 Thousand Hryvnias: Why Ukrainians Are Fined During Picnics
With the arrival of summer, Ukrainians increasingly go on picnics and outdoor recreation. At the same time, before lighting a fire or cooking shashliks, it is worth making sure that this does not contradict fire safety requirements, as violations entail both administrative and criminal liability.
Where it is forbidden to grill shashliks and light fires
In particular, lighting fires is prohibited in forests during the fire hazard period outside specially designated areas, on the territory of nature reserves, closer than 30 meters to buildings and structures, as well as in yards, parks, and squares if there are no specially equipped places for this. The ban also applies to other areas defined by law.
What fines are provided for violating fire safety rules
Fines are provided for violations of fire safety requirements. In particular, for violations in the forest, citizens may face fines from 1,530 to 4,590 hryvnias, and for violations within populated areas — from 340 to 1,360 hryvnias.
When criminal liability may arise for a campfire
If a fire occurs due to careless handling of fire, causing significant property damage or harm to people's health, criminal liability arises. In such cases, a fine from 17,000 to 68,340 hryvnias, corrective labor for up to two years, or restriction or deprivation of liberty for up to three years is possible.
How to safely grill shashliks outdoors
To ensure the rest is safe and does not lead to breaking the law, experts advise lighting fires only in specially equipped places — grills or concrete platforms. Water, sand, or a fire extinguisher should be nearby.
Do not light fires directly on the ground or dry grass, leave them unattended, and after cooking, the fire must be completely extinguished.
