Risk of Nuclear Accident at ZNPP: Ukraine and Russia Agreed on Ceasefire for Repairs
A local ceasefire near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has come into effect, brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This was reported by the IAEA. They indicated that this will allow the start of repairs on a critically important power transmission line necessary to ensure the nuclear safety of the plant.
According to the IAEA, in the coming days, technical specialists from both sides, under the supervision of agency experts, will begin restoring the war-damaged 750-kilovolt "Dniprovska" power transmission line. Before the work begins, the area must be cleared of mines.
The 750 kV line has been out of operation for over two months. Because of this, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe depends only on a single 330 kV power line, which supplies electricity to the cooling systems of six shut-down reactor units.
In recent weeks, ZNPP has lost access to this line several times as well, forcing personnel to start emergency diesel generators—the last backup power source for the plant.
The IAEA noted that this is already the sixth temporary ceasefire agreed upon between Ukraine and Russia to carry out work necessary to maintain nuclear safety.
This time, preparations for the repair were complicated by the location of the damage to the power transmission line.
