The Ministry of Environmental Protection of Georgia announced a tender for a scientific study worth 400 thousand Georgian lari (approximately 130 thousand euros). The goal is to determine the number of brown bears in the country. This is reported by the Georgian Russian-language publication SOVA News.

It is noted that the large-scale study will allow specialists to update data on the number of brown bears in Georgia and assess the state of their population according to the modern criteria of the "Red List."

In national parks and reserves, bear monitoring is conducted continuously, but to get a fuller picture, it is necessary to collect information outside protected areas — in the wild.

The tender executor will have to apply a methodology that will allow the most accurate determination of the state of the brown bear population.

According to experts' estimates, from 1 to 1.5 thousand brown bears live in Georgia. Some of them may migrate between neighboring countries. The species is listed as threatened, and hunting it in the country is prohibited.
