The Ministry of Economy wants to obtain Ukrainians' handwritten notes to train AI to recognize handwriting
The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine announced the collection of Ukrainian handwritten documents to expand the RUKOPYS dataset in order to train artificial intelligence models to recognize handwritten text.
The ministry notes that the project aims to improve the ability of digital systems to read Ukrainian handwriting from different eras and styles — from modern notes to archival documents.
Libraries, museums, state and private archives, educational institutions, public organizations, as well as private collectors, are invited to cooperate.
To form the dataset, various handwritten materials are sought, including letters, diaries, notes, handwritten notebooks, archival documents from different historical periods, exam and educational papers, notes, and other documents with different handwriting samples.
The Ministry of Economy reported that the project team takes on all digitization and processing of materials. Legal support is provided by the Ukrainian Catholic University.
The dataset is published openly under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, and all sources will be used with proper attribution.
Recall that an initiative was launched in Ukraine aimed at overcoming one of the key barriers to digitalization — working with handwritten data.
