The State Migration Service of Ukraine reminded that by July 16, 2026, foreigners who acquired Ukrainian citizenship from January 1, 2018, or those undergoing proceedings for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship, may submit a declaration of renunciation of foreign citizenship and recognition of themselves solely as Ukrainian citizens instead of fulfilling the obligation to terminate foreign citizenship. This applies to the following categories of persons:

1) those who are serving or have served under contract in accordance with Ukrainian legislation, including those awarded a state award of Ukraine, in:

  • The Armed Forces of Ukraine,
  • The State Special Transport Service,
  • The National Guard of Ukraine,
  • whose contract was terminated and who were discharged from military service on grounds specified in subparagraphs “a”, “b”, “c” of paragraphs 1, 2, subparagraphs “a”, “b” of paragraph 3 of part five of Article 26 of the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service”,
  • are a child or the second spouse of such persons, or one of the parents of the spouses, or a child of one of the spouses;

2) those who have outstanding merits before Ukraine or whose admission to Ukrainian citizenship constitutes a state interest for Ukraine, are a child or the second spouse of such persons, or a child of one of the spouses;

3) foreigners among the persons specified in part twenty of Article 4 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons”, are a child or the second spouse of such persons, or one of the parents of the spouses, or a child of one of the spouses;

4) those who are citizens of a state recognized by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as an aggressor or occupying state, who have suffered persecution in their country of citizenship for political reasons, confirmed by a document provided for by the Law of Ukraine “On Citizenship of Ukraine” in the version effective before this Law came into force, are a child or the second spouse of such persons, or a child of one of the spouses;

5) those who are the second spouse or child, or one of the parents of the spouses, or a child of one of the spouses of a person who served under contract in accordance with Ukrainian legislation in:

  • The Armed Forces of Ukraine,
  • The State Special Transport Service,
  • The National Guard of Ukraine,
  • and died in the line of duty, or a person entitled to receive a temporary residence permit under part twenty of Article 4 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Legal Status of Foreigners and Stateless Persons” and died in the line of duty;

6) those who are the second spouse of a Ukrainian citizen who is serving or has served in accordance with Ukrainian legislation in:

  • The Armed Forces of Ukraine,
  • other military formations established according to the laws of Ukraine,
  • The Security Service of Ukraine,
  • The State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine,
  • The National Guard of Ukraine,
  • The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine,
  • The State Protection Department of Ukraine,
  • The State Special Transport Service,
  • special law enforcement agencies,
  • intelligence agencies of Ukraine,
  • and who died (passed away) in the line of duty or was discharged from military service on grounds specified in paragraphs “a”, “b”, “c” of part two, paragraphs “a”, “b”, “c”, “e” of part three, subparagraphs “b”, “c”, “d”, “e” of paragraph 1 and subparagraphs “a”, “b”, “d”, “e” of paragraph 2 of part four, subparagraphs “a”, “b”, “c”, “g”, “p” of paragraph 2, subparagraphs “a”, “b”, “d” of paragraph 3 of part five, subparagraphs “a”, “b”, “d”, “i” of paragraph 2, subparagraphs “a”, “b”, “d”, “g” of paragraph 3 of part six of Article 26 of the Law of Ukraine “On Military Duty and Military Service”,
  • or is one of the parents of the spouses, or a child of one of the spouses of these persons.
