Trains may be delayed by a minute – Kyiv metro plans to introduce a minute of silence
In the capital, it is proposed to hold a nationwide minute of silence every day at 09:00 at all Kyiv metro stations. The initiative involves audio announcements, visual messages for passengers, and, if possible, a short delay in the departure of trains that are at the stations at that time.
Initiative to honor memory in the metro
A petition No. 14412 has been registered on the Kyiv City Council website proposing to introduce a nationwide minute of silence at Kyiv metro stations.
The author of the appeal notes that every day at 09:00 in Ukraine, a nationwide minute of silence is held to honor the memory of fallen defenders of Ukraine as well as all civilian victims of Russian aggression.
At the same time, the Kyiv metro is one of the largest public spaces in the capital, used daily by hundreds of thousands of people. Due to being in transit or lack of mobile connection in certain metro sections, many passengers do not have the opportunity to receive a reminder about the start of the minute of silence.
What is proposed
The petition proposes to introduce a unified procedure for conducting the minute of silence at all Kyiv metro stations.
In particular, the author of the initiative suggests:
- daily at 09:00 broadcasting a special audio announcement at all stations calling to join the nationwide minute of silence;
- providing visual information to passengers about the start and end of the minute of silence, including by displaying the corresponding message, countdown, or other accessible means where technically possible;
- if possible, delaying the departure of trains that are at the station at 09:00 by one minute;
- not introducing any additional restrictions for trains moving between stations to avoid violating safety requirements and the continuous operation of the metro.
The author explained the purpose of the initiative
According to the author of the appeal, implementing such a format will not require significant changes in the metro’s operation but will allow hundreds of thousands of passengers to simultaneously honor the memory of the fallen every day without creating safety risks or significantly affecting the transportation schedule.
The petition text also emphasizes that the minute of silence is not only a symbolic gesture but also a daily expression of gratitude and respect for those who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
The author believes that Kyiv, as the capital, should be an example of dignified memory honoring, and the Kyiv metro should be a place where this tradition unites residents and visitors of the city.
