Kyrgyzstan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the first time since gaining independence in 1991. The country will serve on one of the key bodies of the United Nations during 2027–2028.

The election took place on June 4 at the UN headquarters in New York. Kyrgyzstan secured the seat from the Asia-Pacific group, surpassing the Philippines.

Thus, the country will join the 15 members of the UN Security Council for the first time. Previously, Kazakhstan represented the Central Asian region in the Security Council as a non-permanent member in 2017–2018.

The election of Kyrgyzstan is an important diplomatic achievement for the country's authorities. The President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, previously called on the international community to support Bishkek's candidacy and provide more opportunities to countries that have never been represented on the UN Security Council. He particularly emphasized the need for broader representation of landlocked and mountainous countries facing security, climate, and economic challenges.

On the eve of the vote, Kyrgyzstan's Foreign Minister Zheenbek Kulubaev advocated for reforming the UN Security Council by expanding the representation of Asian, African, and Latin American countries among the Council's permanent members.

Currently, the permanent members of the UN Security Council with veto power remain the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China.

Alongside Kyrgyzstan, Zimbabwe, Trinidad and Tobago, Portugal, and Austria were also elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2027–2028. They will begin their work on the Security Council on January 1, 2027, replacing Pakistan, Somalia, Greece, Denmark, and Panama.
