Not all documents require mandatory replacement after changing your last name — which ones can be updated optionally
Changing your last name after marriage registration involves a number of legal procedures, but not all documents require mandatory updating. Some of them remain valid without the need for urgent replacement.
At the same time, Ukrainian legislation establishes a list of documents that must be updated within one month after changing personal data. In particular, these are:
- Ukrainian citizen passport. After changing the last name, the passport must be obligatorily exchanged. A corresponding mark about the need for replacement is made in the document. To replace it, you should contact the subdivision of the State Migration Service of Ukraine or the Administrative Services Center;
- foreign passport. After receiving the new internal passport, you must also reissue the passport for traveling abroad, which can also be done at the State Migration Service of Ukraine or the Administrative Services Center;
- registration number of the taxpayer's account card. Identification data must also correspond to the new last name, and you can update them at the State Tax Service of Ukraine;
- driver's license. To update the license, you should contact the MIA service center.
At the same time, a number of documents do not require mandatory replacement after changing the last name. These include, in particular, the employment record book, education documents, and property title documents. In such cases, changes are made in another way: for example, by the employer or they remain valid without updating, since changing the last name does not affect their legal force.
It is also noted separately that some documents remain valid without replacement, but updating them will help avoid misunderstandings in the future — especially in the fields of medical care, banking services, or insurance.
Thus, changing your last name does not mean an automatic obligation to update all documents, but it involves selective replacement of key identification documents and updating other data.
