The EU may limit the veto right for new members, including Ukraine: what is known
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that future member countries of the European Union may not receive full veto rights at the start of their membership.
As media report, she said this ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg.
In response to a question about the possible limitation of Ukraine's veto right at the initial stage of membership, Kos noted that it is necessary to ensure that new EU members comply with European rules in the long term — after 5, 10, or 15 years.
According to her, such approaches are currently being worked out, including on the example of Montenegro, and it concerns the formation of a new generation of accession treaties with additional safeguards.
Kos emphasized that details will be determined separately for each country at the stage of finalizing agreements.
Recall that the European Union will officially start negotiations on June 15 for the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the EU. This was announced by President Roberta Metsola.
According to her, EU member states have given the "green light" to start negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union.
