The State Tax Service Warned About Fake Emails with "Inspection Reports" – How Scammers Operate
The State Tax Service warns about a mass distribution of fake emails demanding urgent review of "inspection reports" and providing explanations, which are actually part of a scam scheme.
The subjects of such messages usually mention alleged "discrepancies found in reports." The email texts urge recipients to urgently review the supposed inspection report and provide explanations to avoid administrative asset seizure.
The State Tax Service emphasizes that these messages have no connection to the tax authority. They are sent from third-party email addresses and contain links or attachments that may include malicious software.
Citizens are urged to be cautious, as opening such files or clicking on suspicious links may lead to computer infection and grant scammers hidden remote access to the user's device.
In some cases, scammers disguise their email addresses as the official State Tax Service domain @tax.gov.ua, while in others they use completely unrelated addresses.
If an email comes from a domain different from the official one, it is a sign of forgery. In other cases, attention should be paid to typical signs of fraudulent messages.
In particular, attachments in .pdf, .zip, .rar formats, as well as files with .exe and .scr extensions, should raise suspicion. It is through such attachments that scammers try to deceive users and gain access to their devices.
The State Tax Service urges citizens and business entities to follow basic cybersecurity rules:
- do not open suspicious attachments and links;
- carefully check the sender's address;
- do not trust even familiar contacts without additional verification;
- use up-to-date antivirus software.
