Estonia has become the third European Union country after the Netherlands and Lithuania to allow Tesla vehicles with autopilot systems to operate on public roads.

As reported by ERR, no additional legislation was required for this, since the driver remains responsible for the vehicle and must stay behind the wheel.

The Estonian Transport Authority has permitted the use of Tesla's FSD driver assistance system on the country's roads, recognizing the type certificate previously issued in the Netherlands.

It is expected that within the next few months, owners of new Tesla electric vehicles in Estonia will be able to install a software update that provides autopilot functions.

The head of the Vehicle Maintenance Department, Jurgo Vahtra, emphasized that FSD remains a driver assistance system and not fully autonomous driving.

According to him, the driver is responsible for the vehicle's behavior on the road and traffic safety and must take control when necessary.

At the same time, as Vahtra explained, the Tesla system itself monitors the driver's attention. If the person is distracted from the road or engaged in other activities, the system warns them about inattention to traffic.
