A Ukrainian was detained in Warsaw after the disappearance of a legendary catfish that lived in Lake Balaton for over 20 years
In Warsaw, law enforcement officers detained a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen who may be involved in catching a large catfish from Lake Balaton in the Gocław district. This was reported by Polsat News.
The incident occurred on May 30. According to information spread on social media along with video recordings, two men were riding a water bike on the lake. One of them caught a 183-centimeter catfish using a fishing rod, which, according to locals, had lived in the water body for about 20 years.
The fish was well known to local fishermen and had the status of a kind of lake legend. It had been caught multiple times before but was released back into the water each time. This time, the catfish was placed in the trunk of a car without access to water and taken away in an unknown direction.
According to eyewitnesses, people present at the scene expressed outrage at the men's actions, but they did not respond to the remarks and left the area with the fish.
The police reported that the detention took place after verifying information that appeared in the media. As police representative Joanna Wengzniak noted, criminal investigation officers are establishing all the circumstances of the incident. Currently, law enforcement does not disclose any possible procedural decisions regarding the detainee.
The police suspect that the fish may have been caught during the catfish protection period when its capture is prohibited. In addition, information is being checked regarding possible cruel treatment of the animal due to transportation without access to water.
In Warsaw, the catfish protection period lasts from January 1 to May 31.
Fishermen also draw attention to the fact that the fish was caught using a water bike. The circumstances of this episode are also being investigated by law enforcement.
