Shooting occurred during festival in Ohio – at least 12 people injured
Shooting took place near the annual Old West End festival in Toledo, Ohio. At least 12 people were injured as a result of the incident. NBC News reports.
According to the deputy police chief of Toledo, the shooting occurred shortly after 5:30 PM near the festival. Preliminary information indicates that at least two armed individuals opened fire, possibly shooting at each other.
Two of the injured are in critical condition. As of Saturday evening, the suspects have not been apprehended.
According to a police lieutenant, the youngest injured person is 14 years old, the oldest is 61. Most of the victims are just over 20 years old.
At the time of the shooting, several hundred people were at the festival. Old West End is an annual event in Toledo that includes concerts, food fairs, a beer garden, and entertainment for children.
The police are interviewing victims and witnesses and reviewing surveillance camera footage. According to law enforcement, additional police officers were on duty during the festival, including off-duty personnel, and mobile security cameras were used.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine stated that he is deeply concerned about the incident. He emphasized that summer festivals should be a safe place for family recreation without the threat of violence.
After the shooting, festival organizers announced the cancellation of all events scheduled for Sunday. The Old West End Association stated that continuing the celebrations under such circumstances would be inappropriate and impossible.
