Lightning struck a tent camp in Germany: nine people injured, including a child
In southwestern Germany, during a powerful thunderstorm, lightning struck a tent camp where participants of a sporting event were staying. As a result of the incident, nine people were injured, including a 13-year-old child.
The event occurred on the night of June 20 in the town of Rastatt near the French border. At the time of the bad weather, people were trying to secure tents that were being damaged by strong winds. It was then that lightning struck the camp area, writes Tagesschau.
Among the injured were eight adults and one child. One of the victims sustained serious injuries, but their life is not in danger. Six people were taken to hospitals for medical assistance.
Another incident occurred in the district of Reutlingen, where lightning struck near a woman who was passing through a stadium. She was also injured.
According to German media, before the bad weather, the region experienced intense heat — air temperatures reached about 35 degrees Celsius. The thunderstorm caused numerous consequences: fallen trees, localized flooding, power outages, and the cancellation of several mass events, including a festival near the city of Tuttlingen.
In the Reutlingen district, some residents were temporarily left without electricity due to two lightning strikes on energy infrastructure.
Meteorologists warn that high temperatures and new thunderstorms are expected in the region again very soon. According to the German Meteorological Service forecasts, new temperature records may be set over the weekend and early next week.
