Italy Suspends the Schengen Agreement: Sea and Air Borders with Spain Closed
The Ministry of the Interior has ordered the closure of sea and and air borders with Spain, thereby suspending the Schengen Agreement, the ANSA agency reports.
This decision follows the latest information analysed, in particular, by the Committee on Immigration and Border Security Analysis. Minister Matteo Piantedosi chaired the committee this morning at Viminale, in connection with the migration crisis in Ceuta.
Additionally, Italy will strengthen controls along its border with France. After a phone conversation between Minister Piantedosi and his French counterpart, Laurent Nunez, the two agreed on the advisability of enhancing controls along their shared land border. This will be carried out within the framework of existing cooperation agreements between French and Italian law enforcement agencies.
Spain is deploying military forces to Ceuta due to a sharp increase in the flow of irregular migrants. The government made this decision after approximately 1,500 people illegally crossed the sea from Morocco to the North African enclave in the past week.
