Macron Announced Increased Border Control with Spain: 4 Mobile Force Units Deployed
French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s support for Spain amidst the migration crisis in Ceuta and reported increased controls at the French-Spanish border.
Macron stated that he has maintained contact with the head of the Spanish government to express France’s solidarity and offer necessary assistance, including through the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex.
"I welcome the current cooperation with Morocco, which has already facilitated over 40,000 returns from Ceuta to Morocco today," the French President said.
He noted that the Interior Ministers of France and Spain are in constant contact to monitor the evolving situation.
Macron further stated that he has instructed the French Interior Minister to strengthen controls at the border with Spain, should it become necessary.
"Four mobile force units, aircraft, and drones have already been deployed," the French leader confirmed.
According to Macron, these measures complement France’s ongoing policy, implemented since 2020, to enhance border protection with Spain. This policy includes joint brigades and coordinated actions to combat illegal migration.
Macron also affirmed France’s continued support for European mechanisms concerning migrant returns and the implementation of the EU Pact on Asylum and Migration.
"Last year, the number of illegal flows to the European Union decreased by 25%, and in 2026 the decline continues on the Atlantic route and the Western Mediterranean route," the French President observed.
He added that EU countries must act collectively to ensure control over returns and protect the EU’s external borders.
"I once again express our solidarity with Spain, its government, and its people," Macron concluded.
Recall that Italy has suspended the Schengen Agreement.
