The European Union fined the Chinese marketplace Temu 200 million euros for violating digital safety rules. The European Commission stated that the platform failed to properly assess the risks of selling dangerous and illegal goods to buyers in EU countries.

According to the investigation, Temu users in Europe face a high risk of encountering products that do not meet safety standards.

Which products on Temu were deemed dangerous

During inspections in the EU, various products sold through the platform were tested. In particular, a significant portion of charging devices failed basic safety checks.

Children's toys also came under scrutiny. Some contained hazardous chemicals exceeding permissible limits or had small parts that could cause choking hazards for children.

The European Commission believes that Temu significantly underestimated the scale of the problem.

Why the EU punished Temu

In Brussels, it was stated that Temu violated the requirements of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which obliges large online platforms to assess risks for users and combat dangerous goods.

Main complaints against the company include:

  • the platform analyzed risks generally for the online trade market, not specifically for its own service;
  • the company underestimated the number of dangerous products visible to buyers;
  • Temu did not consider that recommendation algorithms and advertising through bloggers could help spread dangerous products.

What will happen next with Temu in Europe

The Temu marketplace must submit a plan by August 28, 2026, detailing how it will eliminate violations and strengthen product control.

If the company fails to meet EU requirements, it may face new financial sanctions.

The investigation into Temu in the EU began in the fall of 2024. The inspection used results from test purchases, the company's own reports, as well as data from customs and supervisory authorities of EU countries.
