Monobank, PrivatBank, Viber, and Netflix experienced an outage: why popular services simultaneously "went down"
On June 2, a large-scale outage occurred in a number of popular digital services. Users are massively reporting problems accessing banking applications, social networks, streaming platforms, and other online services.
According to the outage monitoring service Downdetector, difficulties arose in the operation of platforms such as Viber, Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Twitch, Slack, as well as certain banking services, including PrivatBank and monobank.
The preliminary cause of the widespread disruptions is a technical failure in Amazon Web Services (AWS) — one of the largest cloud platforms in the world, whose infrastructure is used by thousands of companies and online services.
Due to problems with AWS, users also report interruptions in the operation of popular platforms and services in Ukraine such as Rozetka, MEGOGO, Ajax Systems, Kyivstar, Disney+, Spotify, Adobe, Canva, Notion, Pinterest, Reddit, Coinbase, Binance, Figma, Duolingo, Zoom, Epic Games, Ubisoft Connect, PlayStation Network, and a number of other resources.
Users complain about the inability to authorize, errors during payments, delays in mobile app performance, lack of push notifications, problems with video and music content playback, as well as inaccessibility of certain websites and cloud services.
Experts estimate that even local problems in AWS operation can cause a domino effect for thousands of platforms worldwide due to the extensive use of this cloud infrastructure.
