Baby food must be of high quality, safe, and nutritious, as children's health and development depend on it. This was reported by the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

The agency notes that special requirements are established for manufacturers and sellers of baby food in Ukraine, particularly regarding product labeling.

Specifically, on the packaging of baby food, in addition to the general mandatory information about the food product, the following must also be indicated:

  • alongside the product name, the age of the child from which it is allowed to be consumed;
  • information about special dietary needs, functional states, and/or diseases for which the product is recommended;
  • instructions on how to prepare and/or use the product, as well as warnings about health risks to the child in case of improper preparation or storage, if relevant — also a mark on the importance of following the instructions;
  • extended information about nutritional value, which additionally includes the amount of each mineral (except molybdenum), each vitamin, as well as choline, inositol, and carnitine;
  • data on the content of vitamins and minerals expressed as a percentage of reference intake values;
  • information about the unconditional preference for breastfeeding;
  • a ban on the use in labeling, advertising, and presentation of infant formulas for initial and follow-up feeding of the terms “humanized,” “maternal,” “adapted,” and derivatives of these words in any language.

The State Service reminded that the full list of labeling requirements is defined by Article 6-1 of the Law of Ukraine "On Information for Consumers Regarding Food Products."

Business entities are also encouraged to notify the State Service about the intention to introduce baby food into circulation.

The list of such notifications regarding baby food, products for special medical purposes, and weight control products is published on the official web portal of the agency.
