On Wednesday, June 17, Ukraine and the world observe a number of holidays. Several important events also happened on this day in the past.

June 17 is celebrated in Ukraine and worldwide as World Garbage Collector Day. The purpose of this day is to draw attention to the important but often underestimated work of people who collect and remove household waste, maintain the cleanliness of cities and villages, and prevent epidemics and environmental pollution.

Also, June 17 is World Crocodile Day. Its goal is to raise awareness about crocodiles as ancient but vulnerable predators that play an important role in freshwater ecosystems. Although this holiday is not an official UN international day, environmental organizations and zoos use it for educational campaigns and awareness-raising.

Additionally, June 17 is the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. It was proclaimed in 1994 after the adoption of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification to draw attention to the problems of land degradation worldwide. On this day, campaigns are held dedicated to land restoration, moisture conservation, reforestation, and sustainable land use.

June 17 also marks World Karate Day. The date is connected with historical events in the development of karate as a martial art, particularly its popularization worldwide in the 20th century and the formation of modern schools and federations.

What Church Holiday Is Today

On June 17, believers commemorate the Day of Remembrance of the Holy Martyrs Manuel, Savel, and Ismail. According to tradition, they were noble Persian envoys sent by King Shapur II to the Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate to negotiate peace. While in the Roman Empire, they openly professed the Christian faith and refused to worship pagan gods. Because of this, they were brutally tortured and executed around the year 362. In Christian tradition, they are honored as martyrs for their faith, and their memory is observed in the Orthodox calendar.
