Ukrainian schools lack 1.7 thousand teachers: which specialists are most needed
The Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, stated that there are currently about 1.7 thousand teacher vacancies in Ukrainian schools, but there is no talk of a critical shortage of teaching staff.
According to the minister, the provided data is official, although the actual number of vacancies may be higher since not all educational institutions post information about their staffing needs.
The most difficult situation, Lisovyi noted, is observed in small schools. Therefore, communities need to review the network of educational institutions taking into account the number of students.
The Ministry of Education explains that the educational subsidy is distributed depending on the number of children in the school. Due to the low class sizes in such institutions, teachers have less workload and lower salaries, which complicates staffing and negatively affects the quality of education.
Schools most need teachers of natural sciences, English language, computer science, mathematics, as well as Ukrainian language and literature.
The minister also pointed out that educational institutions often solve the staffing shortage by redistributing hours among teachers already working at the school. At the same time, he emphasized that this approach is not optimal, and schools should be fully staffed with teachers.
According to Lisovyi, it is necessary to form an effective network of schools with a sufficient number of students for this purpose.
"Undoubtedly, schools need to be fully staffed with teachers. For this, an appropriate network is needed and schools must have a student body," the minister said in an interview with Radio Liberty.
