In Kyiv, the initiative to temporarily ban large-scale tree pruning during the period when birds are raising their offspring and wild animals are establishing their habitats was not supported. The authors of the appeal emphasized that annual pruning work can negatively affect the urban ecosystem; however, the proposal did not receive enough support from the capital's residents for further consideration by the city authorities.

The initiative on the Kyiv City Council website calling to ban tree pruning in the capital during the so-called quiet season did not gather the necessary number of votes.

According to data from the Kyiv City Council electronic petition platform, the appeal was registered on April 7. As of June 8, it received about 1,000 votes out of the 6,000 required for consideration.

What is the quiet season and why was it proposed to be considered

The author of the appeal pointed out that the "quiet season" lasts annually from April 1 to June 15. This environmental protection period is aimed at protecting wild animals and birds during the mating season and offspring rearing.

According to the author, the city is also a habitat for many species of animals and birds, and excessive tree pruning, especially so-called "pruning to the trunk," can deprive them of natural shelters. The appeal noted that such work can destroy bird nests, and the noise from the work can disturb squirrels, hedgehogs, and other urban wildlife.

In this regard, it was proposed to impose restrictions on the work of the specialized municipal enterprise "Kyivzelenbud." In particular, the author called for banning tree pruning during the quiet season, leaving exceptions only for cases where branches pose a direct threat to human life and health.

Since the appeal did not gather the required number of votes within the set timeframe, it will not be submitted for consideration by the Kyiv City Council. To be considered, 6,000 signatures were needed, but the initiative was supported by only about 1,000 people.
