Is it allowed to laminate a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or diploma, and will this cause problems when processing documents or crossing the border? Despite the common practice of protecting important papers with transparent film, laminated documents often cause difficulties when dealing with government agencies. Although there is no direct ban on laminating documents in Ukraine, in some cases this can complicate verifying the authenticity of the document, placing necessary marks, or passing inspections. Therefore, experts advise carefully weighing all risks before laminating official documents.

Is it necessary to laminate documents: what the law says

Laminating documents with transparent film has long become a common practice. Many citizens laminate diplomas, birth certificates, marriage or divorce certificates, believing that this will help protect the documents from damage and extend their storage period.

However, problems may arise when applying to certain government institutions or organizations, as not all agree to accept laminated documents.

There is no specific prohibition on laminating important documents in Ukraine. The legislation also does not contain provisions that directly forbid citizens from laminating official documents.

At the same time, government bodies and institutions are obliged to work with original documents. If a document is covered with laminating film, in some cases difficulties may arise in verifying its authenticity. In particular, it is impossible to fully examine all the security features of the document under the film, as well as to exclude the possibility of third-party interference.

What problems can arise from laminating documents

One of the main reasons experts do not recommend laminating important documents is the inability to add certain official marks to them.

Specifically, this concerns the apostille — a special stamp that confirms the validity of an official document for use abroad. The apostille is recognized by all countries participating in the Hague Convention and is often placed on birth certificates, marriage certificates, and other civil status documents.

If the document is already laminated, it is impossible to place an apostille on it. In such cases, the document owner may need to obtain a new copy or duplicate of the document.

Can difficulties arise at the border

When crossing the state border, authorized bodies may also check citizens' documents. If the document is laminated, they may ask to replace it with another original document without film coating for proper verification.

That is why experts advise refraining from laminating documents that may be needed for legally significant actions, identity verification, or use abroad.

Which documents can be laminated without worry

The warnings about laminating do not apply to documents originally made from polymer materials or in plastic form.

Such documents include:

  • Ukrainian citizen's passport in the form of an ID card;
  • pension certificate;
  • driver's license;
  • international driver's license;
  • other documents made as plastic cards.

Thus, although laminating documents in Ukraine is not prohibited, in many cases it can create additional difficulties when confirming the authenticity of the document, placing an apostille, or passing inspections. Therefore, before laminating important documents, it is worth considering the possible consequences of their further use.
