How should Ukrainians abroad handle vaccination according to the national Vaccination Schedule after returning or while living outside the country?

The Ministry of Health has answered this question.

In particular, they noted that if a child or adult has lived abroad for some time and received vaccinations there, it is important to correctly integrate this data into the vaccination system according to the Ukrainian Preventive Vaccination Schedule.

Experts emphasize that national vaccination schedules in different countries may vary, as they are formed taking into account the epidemiological situation in the region. At the same time, they are based on WHO recommendations regarding basic infections, including measles, poliomyelitis, and diphtheria.

What to do in this case

Use international antigen codes. For example, MMR is designated as MMR everywhere, and hepatitis B as HepB. This is understandable to doctors anywhere in the world.

Do not try to synchronize schedules on your own. Consult a doctor, provide available vaccination records, and discuss a catch-up vaccination plan.

Be sure to inform your family doctor in Ukraine about vaccinations received abroad.

As soon as you have a document about a vaccination done abroad, be sure to send a copy to your doctor in Ukraine. This will allow the data to be entered into the Electronic Health System (if technically possible) or added to your paper medical record.

It is almost certain that you will be missing some vaccines or will need additional vaccinations when comparing the schedules of the country where you live/lived and Ukraine. Your family doctor may recommend catching up on the schedule after your return home.

For example, vaccination against tuberculosis (BCG) is mandatory in Ukraine, but in Germany or the USA it has been abandoned due to the extremely low incidence of tuberculosis there. Conversely, in Germany or Italy, the schedule includes vaccinations against rotavirus and pneumococcal infections, while in Ukraine these are recommended but not mandatory.

A practical tool is the International Vaccination Passport — an official document that meets WHO requirements and is recognized in many countries worldwide. The certificate includes all vaccination data in Ukrainian and English.

Medical professionals emphasize: even when moving between countries, the goal remains the same — timely protection against infectious diseases. If there is no documentary confirmation of previous vaccinations, international practice often involves administering vaccinations according to the schedule of the country where you currently reside.
