The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine reminded that the new law "On Vocational Education" granted students of professional colleges more opportunities to develop self-government. In turn, the Ministry approved the Model Regulation on Student Self-Government of Vocational Education Institutions.

Students create self-government bodies to jointly improve conditions for self-realization, develop civic activity, and form organizational and leadership skills within their college community. Previously, this process was unsystematic, and each institution relied on its own traditions and vision of self-government activities.

"From now on, student self-government will be formed and operate according to a unified principle in every professional college in the country," the Ministry stated.

The regulation outlines the main tasks of student self-government bodies:

  • protection of students' rights and interests;
  • promotion of students' educational, scientific, and creative activities;
  • improvement of living, recreation, and dining conditions for students;
  • facilitation of the creation of student clubs, societies, associations, and involvement of students in them;
  • cooperation with student self-government bodies of other vocational education institutions and youth organizations whose activities are non-political and non-religious;
  • assistance in the employment of graduates of vocational education institutions;
  • participation in resolving issues of international exchange.

"Previously, student self-government in professional colleges was more of a solitary initiative than a widespread practice. Now this right of students is enshrined in law, and it opens more opportunities for student communities of colleges across the country. This concerns both the protection of their rights and interests, more active involvement in the institution's activities, and improvement of learning conditions," said Dmytro Zavgorodniy, Deputy Minister for Digital Development, Digital Transformations and Digitalization.

The Ministry added that the institution's leadership is obliged to ensure proper conditions for the activities of student self-government bodies, inform about important decisions affecting students, and support the development of self-government.
