The SBI reported suspicion against a lawyer of the Odesa Region Bar Council, who was caught promising to influence a court decision to mitigate the punishment for a client.

According to the investigation, the lawyer was defending the accused in a case of illegal crossing of persons across the state border of Ukraine. At the same time, he was appointed by the state to provide free legal aid.

However, according to law enforcement, he offered the client to "resolve the issue" of assigning a suspended sentence for $3,000, referring to alleged connections with a judge. In addition, the lawyer demanded additional payment for legal services that were already funded by the state.

Law enforcement detained him after receiving part of the agreed funds.

The lawyer was notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (abuse of influence). The article provides for up to 5 years of imprisonment.

The issue of bringing the lawyer to disciplinary responsibility and depriving the right to practice law is also being considered.
