Ivan Kupala is no longer in July: why the date of the holiday was changed and when to celebrate it now
The holiday of Ivan Kupala is traditionally considered one of the most colorful and mystical in Ukrainian folk culture. It is associated with numerous rituals, folk beliefs, and legends. According to folk beliefs, it is on Kupala Night that the mythical fern flower blooms, and water and fire are endowed with special cleansing and healing properties.
For a long time, Ukrainians celebrated Ivan Kupala on the night of July 6 to 7. However, after the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church switched to the Revised Julian calendar, the date of the celebration changed.
This year, Ukrainians will celebrate Ivan Kupala on the night before June 24.
This is related to the transfer of the celebration date of the Nativity of John the Baptist, which according to the new calendar is celebrated on June 24. Previously, this holiday fell on July 7 according to the old style, so the folk Kupala traditions were tied to it.
Historically, pagan customs and the Christian holiday of the Nativity of John the Forerunner were close in the calendar, but their meanings differ significantly.
The church holiday of the Nativity of John the Baptist is not associated with fortune-telling, floating wreaths on water, or jumping over bonfires. For Christians, it is a day to honor the prophet who baptized Jesus Christ in the waters of the Jordan River.
The holiday of the Nativity of the honorable glorious prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist of the Lord John is dedicated to the event of his birth from righteous parents — the priest Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth.
As previously explained by the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, John the Baptist is among the most revered saints in Christianity. The church calendar dedicates seven separate feast days to his memory. Moreover, he is the only saint, besides Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos, whose birthday is celebrated by the Church.
Therefore, for believers, this day primarily has spiritual significance and is traditionally observed with prayer and worship services.
