Pension from 5190 hryvnias: who receives it and what conditions must be met
After the start of the full-scale war, thousands of Ukrainian families lost relatives who defended the country. To support such families, the legislation provides for a pension due to the loss of a breadwinner. The amount of payments depends on the circumstances of the serviceman's death and the family composition.
The Pension Fund reminded who can claim such assistance and what amounts are guaranteed in 2026.
Who is granted a pension after the death of a serviceman
The procedure for granting a pension to family members of fallen defenders is determined by the Law of Ukraine No. 2262 on pension provision for persons released from military service.
Payments may be granted if the serviceman died or passed away while serving, was already receiving a military pension at the time of death, died within three months after discharge from service, or if death occurred later but was related to injury, concussion, illness, or disability received during the performance of official duties.
Disabled family members of the deceased have the right to a pension. These include minor children, as well as orphaned children up to 23 years old regardless of whether they are studying or not. Full-time students can also receive payments until they reach 23 years of age.
Additionally, a pension may be granted to the parents, husband, or wife of the deceased defender provided the legal requirements are met. Separately, this right is provided for non-working relatives who care for the serviceman's child up to eight years old.
What the amount of payments depends on
The pension amount is determined taking into account the causes of the serviceman's death.
If the defender died while performing official duties, one disabled family member is granted a pension equal to 70% of the serviceman's monetary allowance. If several family members are entitled to payments, each can receive 50% of the corresponding monetary allowance.
In cases where death occurred due to an accident unrelated to military duties, the pension amount is 30% of the monetary allowance for each disabled family member.
What is the minimum guaranteed pension in 2026
The legislation establishes a minimum pension amount due to the loss of a breadwinner. Such payment cannot be less than two subsistence minimums for persons who lost their ability to work.
From January 1, 2026, the minimum guaranteed amount is 5190 hryvnias per month.
