For returns after AWOL, you can now choose from over 70 units. — Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defence has announced an expansion of the voluntary return programme for servicemen after being declared AWOL (Absence Without Leave). Servicemen who meet the programme’s conditions can now choose from over 70 units within the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), the National Guard of Ukraine (NGU), or the State Special Transport Service (DSST) — provided they remain within the structure in which they previously served.

The Ministry reiterated that applications for the return programme can be submitted until 20 September 2026, inclusive. The simplified programme is available to servicemen whose AWOL status was recorded by 12 June 2026, inclusive.

"We have expanded the number of units to provide more opportunities: to serve in the desired area, choose the preferred position and commander, and apply previous experience. Drivers, UAV operators, clerks, shooters — the military needs everyone. Over 70 of the most effective units are ready to accept servicemen after AWOL and give them a chance to return to the fight through a simplified system with full support throughout the entire process," stated Deputy Minister of Defence, Mstyslav Banik.

The programme, which commenced in June, allows participants to select a new military unit from a specified list, indicate their desired service direction and previous experience, receive support from a contact centre, and report directly to their new unit — bypassing Military Service Centres (VSP) and reserve battalions.

Units Available for Return After AWOL

The list includes mechanised, assault, airborne, drone, artillery, and other units. Each requires servicemen with varying levels of experience, military specialities, and skills.

The full list of brigades accepting servicemen after AWOL can be viewed on the official programme website, szch.army.gov.ua/chastyny-dlia-povernennia#perelik-bryhad, and also during the application submission process within the Army+ app.

Upon application submission, recruiters consider the serviceman’s previous experience, skills, desired service direction, and the needs of the chosen military unit. This process helps determine where their experience will be most valuable.

However, the number of positions in certain areas is limited, so those who have already decided on a unit, service direction, and desired position should submit their application without delay.

Advantages of the New Return Algorithm from AWOL

A serviceman can:

• Independently choose a new military unit from a list of over 70 units — within their original structure.

• Indicate their desired service direction, previous experience, and skills.

• Report directly to the new military unit, bypassing Military Service Centres and reserve battalions.

• Upon enrolment, have their monetary, food, and other forms of support reinstated.

• Receive support from the contact centre, via telephone number 1519, at all stages.

Furthermore, for six months after enrolment, a serviceman cannot be transferred to another military unit without their written consent.

Eligibility for the Return Programme After AWOL

The programme applies to servicemen of the AFU, NGU, and DSST whose AWOL status was recorded by 12 June 2026, inclusive.

Applications can be submitted until 20 September 2026, inclusive.

How to Submit an Application for Return After AWOL

Applications can be submitted:

• Through the Army+app.

• Directly to the military unit (for AFU and DSST servicemen).

• Through the 1st or 2nd AFU recruitment centre (for AFU servicemen).
