In Romania, a Russian drone crashed into a multi-story building: there are casualties — video
On the night of May 29, in the Romanian city of Galați, located near the border with Ukraine, a Russian strike drone hit a residential building. This was reported by the local emergency response service ISU.
After the drone hit the building, an explosion was heard, followed by a fire in an apartment on the 10th floor.
"Recently in the city of Galați, a drone fell on a residential building. As a result of the impact, an explosion occurred and a fire broke out in an apartment on the 10th floor. ISU Galați forces and equipment arrived at the scene to eliminate the consequences of the incident and ensure the safety of the area, supported by other Ministry of Internal Affairs units and specialized SRI teams. Two people who were in the apartment that caught fire evacuated on their own. No casualties have been found so far," the report said.
Currently, two people are known to be injured.
Reaction of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the drone incident a "serious and irresponsible escalation" by Russia.
"This incident is a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation. Romania will take the necessary diplomatic measures in response to this serious violation of international law and its airspace," the Romanian MFA statement said.
The ministry added that Romania informed its allies and the NATO Secretary General about the circumstances and requested measures to accelerate the provision of counter-drone means.
"The Russian Federation remains an aggressor state conducting an illegal war that has serious consequences for regional security and citizen safety. The Russian Federation bears direct responsibility for these serious and irresponsible actions," the Romanian diplomatic service stated.
Romania, the MFA added, will act with maximum determination to strengthen international pressure on the Russian Federation to achieve an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire.
Statement of the Romanian Ministry of Defense
The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that the drone turned out to be Russian.
To intercept the aerial target, two F-16 fighters supported by a helicopter were scrambled from the Fetești airbase at 01:19. The pilots were authorized to destroy the target. After the drone was detected, residents of Tulcea, Galați, and Brăila counties were promptly warned of the danger via the Ro-Alert system.
"The situation is developing, and we will provide information and official data as it becomes available," said the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.
At about 01:53, a message about the drone crash appeared in the Ro-Alert system.
