A powerful explosion occurred at a warehouse in Myanmar: over 40 dead, many injured
A major tragedy occurred in the northeastern part of Myanmar — as a result of an explosion at a warehouse, at least 40 people died and about 70 others were injured to varying degrees. The emergency happened on June 1 in the village of Kaungtup in Namkham district, near the Chinese border. This was reported by Deutsche Welle.
According to preliminary data, explosive materials used in the mining industry were stored at the site.
The explosion caused significant destruction in the settlement. The shock wave damaged residential houses and other structures, and the number of victims is still being clarified.
Different sources provide varying figures regarding the dead. Rescuers report 40–46 victims, including children. Meanwhile, some news agencies estimate the death toll at 46–59 people. Search operations continue as people may still be trapped under the rubble.
It is known that the warehouse was located in a territory controlled by the "Ta'ang National Liberation Army" group. Representatives of the organization stated that the site stored gelignite — an industrial explosive widely used in mineral extraction and quarry operations.
The group expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and promised to determine the causes of the tragedy. Experts note that improper storage of gelignite can make it unstable and pose a serious danger.
Due to the large number of injured, medical facilities in the district are facing a shortage of donor blood. Doctors continue to provide assistance to the wounded, while rescuers are clearing the debris.
