Former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has had his Moldovan citizenship restored, which he was deprived of in 2017, writes NewsMaker.

“President Maia Sandu, by her decree, restored Moldovan citizenship to former Romanian President Traian Băsescu, which in 2017 was revoked by the leader of the PSRM party Igor Dodon after becoming president,” the statement reads.

Sandu thanked Băsescu for his “contribution to correcting historical injustice and promoting the restoration of Romanian citizenship, advancing scholarships for our youth, and his unwavering support for Moldova.”

“Mr. Băsescu, now you are not only our brother but also our citizen. We are waiting for you at home,” added the Moldovan president.

Băsescu, in turn, thanked Sandu for this decision.

Moldovan citizenship was granted to Traian Băsescu in 2016 by then Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti. At the beginning of 2017, Moldovan President Igor Dodon signed a decree revoking Băsescu's Moldovan citizenship.

The former Romanian president challenged Dodon's decree in court, then in the Court of Appeal and the Higher Judicial Chamber (HJC). In November 2018, the HJC rejected Băsescu's complaint to restore citizenship.
