The Italian Government Prepares Electoral Reform – Winners to Receive More Seats
The government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has presented a bill to reform the country's electoral legislation. Bloomberg reports on this.
The document was submitted on May 27. If adopted, the coalition that wins the elections and receives over 42% of the votes will get additional seats in parliament.
The goal of the reform is to form a more stable parliamentary majority for the winning government.
The bill also stipulates that coalitions and political parties must designate their candidate for prime minister at the stage of submitting electoral lists. This is intended to strengthen the role of the head of government in the country's political system.
For the document to come into force, it must be approved by both chambers of the Italian parliament.
Giorgia Meloni stated that she intends to remain in office until the end of her term.
According to her, "consistency and stability" are a great opportunity for Italy, and the government will do everything possible to maintain stability until the end of the mandate.
