Romania considers invoking NATO Article 4 after Russian drone crash
As is known, on the night of May 29, during a Russian air attack on Ukraine, a drone crashed into a 10-story building in the Romanian city of Galați, after which a fire broke out. Two people are reported injured.
Romania's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu, stated that the country is considering initiating consultations with allies within NATO under Article 4 following the incident. She said this on digi24.
According to her, the incident with the Russian drone could be grounds for invoking Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which provides for consultations among NATO member countries in case of a threat to their security, territorial integrity, or political independence.
The official emphasized that the matter is under discussion, and the final decision on a possible convening of the National Security Council must be made by the country's president.
"Article 4 is a tool that Romania can use. Last night's incident falls under the category of incidents that justify the use of such tools. We are talking about consultations among allied states at the moment when one of the allied states believes there is a threat to it. Obviously, the invocation of Article 4 is a joint interagency decision," she explained.
NATO Article 4 does not imply a military response but consultations among allies regarding further steps in case of a threat to a member state. Previously, Alliance countries, including Poland, have already resorted to this mechanism.
