Europe Hit by Abnormal Heat: Countries Record Temperature Records and Deadly Consequences
Europe faced a heatwave this week: several countries recorded temperature records amid a persistent high-pressure area known as the "heat dome," reports The Guardian.
In the United Kingdom, a May temperature record was broken on Tuesday — 35.1°C was recorded at Kew Gardens in London. This exceeded the previous record set just a day earlier when London reached 34.8°C. Previously, the maximum May temperature was 32.8°C and had stood since 1922 (with a repeat in 1944).
Ireland also updated its May temperature record — 28.8°C was recorded simultaneously at two meteorological stations: in Killarney in the southwest and Clonmel in the south of the country.
Records are being set not only for daytime highs but also for nighttime temperatures. On the night of Tuesday in Camborne, southwest England, the temperature did not drop below 21.4°C, marking another "tropical night" when temperatures exceed 20°C.
In France, temperatures reached 36°C on Monday and Tuesday — the hottest May days on record. A government representative reported that the heat this week may have caused the deaths of at least seven people — both directly and indirectly.
Temperatures in some regions of Europe are currently 10–15°C above the seasonal norm. They are expected to remain 5–10°C above average throughout the week, gradually decreasing in the United Kingdom at the beginning of next week.
Meanwhile, in southeastern and eastern Australia, warnings of severe thunderstorms have been in effect until Friday. The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) warns of dangerous wind gusts, heavy rain, hail, and risks of flash floods. In Queensland, the town of Dayboro received 50 mm of precipitation in 30 minutes, and wind gusts up to 104 km/h were recorded in New South Wales.
Forecasts indicate that some areas of New South Wales may receive 40–70 mm of rain within six hours this week, with some places seeing up to 100 mm.
