The newly appointed Prime Minister of Latvia, Andris Kulbergs, stated that he will instruct the Foreign Minister Baiba Brezhe to find a solution to stop exports and imports with Russia, writes Delfi.

According to him, this is an unnecessary dependency that "only worsens the situation."

In this regard, he announced that he will instruct the Foreign Minister to find a solution to this issue, but such a decision will also need to be coordinated with the EU, since Latvia primarily belongs to the European Union's trade community.

At the same time, the official clarified that the situation in the pharmaceutical sector is not so straightforward. He explained that enterprises in this sector will not be able to quickly requalify. The problem is that the certification process in other countries is quite lengthy.

"I know they have a plan, they are reducing (volumes - ed.), but this cannot be done in one day," Kulbergs said.

He also added that companies in this sector have chemical and biological knowledge, including production capacities, which may be important for the country in the defense sphere in a critical situation.

"These capabilities need to be preserved," he summarized, announcing that he plans to meet and discuss these issues with pharmaceutical companies.

The publication adds that in the first quarter of 2026, Latvia exported goods to Russia totaling 244.15 million euros, while importing from the aggressor country goods worth 10.51 million euros.
