Mailman stole over a thousand packages and pensioners' medicines but received one day in prison
In the USA, a former postal worker was convicted for stealing packages and prescription drugs on his mail route. During the investigation, over a thousand undelivered postal items were found in his car, writes Masslive.
Michael Vernon, a 53-year-old resident of Somerville, was arrested in September 2025. In December, he pleaded guilty to one count of theft of postal items by a postal service employee.
The judge sentenced him to a time already served of one day in prison, as well as one year of supervised probation.
In 2024, investigators found over 1,000 undelivered postal items in Vernon's personal vehicle.
Among the found packages were 17 bottles of medicines prescribed for 10 different clients on his mail route in the city of Waltham.
According to the prosecution, most of the victims were elderly people.
The stolen medications included drugs for treating nerve pain, epileptic seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, enlarged prostate, depression, anxiety disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Under American law, the charge against Vernon carried a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.
