ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Suspended Due to Disciplinary Proceedings
The governing body of the International Criminal Court adopted a decision to suspend ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan from his duties until the disciplinary case is finally reviewed by the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute.
The decision was made on June 8 by the Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties following the conclusion of an investigation into allegations of misconduct, including sexual harassment, brought against the prosecutor.
Media reports indicate that this concerns the results of an 18-month investigation into possible non-consensual sexual contact with a lawyer who worked in the prosecutor's office.
In its official statement, the Bureau confirmed the referral of the case to the Assembly and the suspension of the prosecutor from his duties. At the same time, the office emphasized that this decision does not determine the final outcome of the disciplinary case.
Details of the decision and case materials remain confidential.
As reported by Reuters, Karim Khan, through his lawyers, categorically denied any wrongdoing. The defense statement noted that the decision is "illegal, procedurally unfair, and unsupported by evidence."
Karim Khan has not been managing the ICC Prosecutor's Office since May 2026, when he voluntarily took leave during the investigation.
